Online counselling in Langford, BC

Langford grew by almost a third in five years, and an appointment in Victoria still means Highway 1 both ways.

Online counselling for people in Langford is delivered by secure video by Registered Clinical Counsellors registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, in English, Punjabi or Tagalog depending on the counsellor, with a free first consultation and no referral needed.

Also serving Colwood, View Royal, Metchosin, Highlands, Sooke and the rest of Vancouver Island, by the same video sessions.

Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, depending on the plan, so check yours; MSP does not. Receipts are issued for every session, and the fees are published in full.

Langford has grown faster than the region around it. The 2021 Census counted 46,584 residents, up 31.8% in five years against 8.0% for Greater Victoria, and 42.7% of residents aged five and over had been living in a different municipality five years earlier. It is younger, too: a median age of 38.4 against the region’s 44.8, and more children as a share of the city.

That shapes what counselling here is up against. Six in ten residents with a regular workplace commute to another municipality, so the week already includes the Highway 1 corridor at both ends, and for anyone who arrived recently the friends and family they would lean on may still be in the place they left. A Registered Clinical Counsellor by video is the one appointment that adds no drive.

How private is the video?

Bookings and client records are held in Cliniko, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are never recorded, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. The privacy policy sets out the rest.

A new city, a long commute, and a network still being built

Public intake on the West Shore is its own, not Victoria’s. Island Health’s Western Communities Mental Health & Substance Use team (formerly Westshore) is the single access point for adult mental-health and substance-use services across the Western Communities. Access starts with a phone call to 250-370-5799, and the services include a same-day, single-session counselling appointment, screening and assessment, and connection to psychiatry and substance use supports. Use it; private counselling can run alongside it rather than instead of it.

There is a local non-profit too. Pacific Centre Family Services Association’s funded counselling programs primarily serve Langford, Colwood, Sooke, View Royal, Metchosin and the Highlands. Most of that funded counselling is provided at no cost, an affordable community counselling program reaches across the region, and every referral begins with its intake counsellor. The free and low-cost counselling page lists more options across BC.

Six in ten commuters leave the city for work. In the 2021 Census, 61.4% of Langford residents with a usual place of work commuted to another municipality in the region. The Province describes the Highway 1 stretch between the McKenzie and Colwood interchanges as prone to congestion, and bus-lane construction on it is scheduled to continue until late fall 2027. An appointment in Victoria puts that corridor on both sides of the hour, which is how a course of counselling quietly stops.

Arriving is its own strain. More than four in ten residents aged five and over had moved in from another municipality in the previous five years, and nearly one in ten had come from another province. A new house, a new school, a longer drive and a support network left behind are ordinary reasons to feel worse in a place that was meant to be a fresh start, and none of them needs to become a crisis before it is worth talking about.

A younger city than the region around it. In 2021, 17.2% of Langford’s residents were under 15, against 12.7% across Greater Victoria. Parents of young children are among the people for whom an hour across town is hardest to find, and that is the case for counselling for new parents by video.

Specialist work and the language are a regional search, then a mainland one. For EMDR or structured couples work, a West Shore search widens to the whole of Greater Victoria and then across the water; Victoria’s page sets out what the Strait does to that pool. Both language communities here are small: in the 2021 Census 535 Langford residents gave Punjabi as their mother tongue and 670 gave Tagalog. Punjabi-speaking counselling for Langford and Tagalog counselling for Langford say plainly what those numbers mean. From Langford, video takes away the highway as well.

Every region of the province, from one virtual practice.

Why virtual, specifically here

What changes when distance stops mattering

No Highway 1 at either end

The session is the hour itself, from a room at home, rather than the McKenzie-to-Colwood stretch twice over and the parking in between.

Colwood to Sooke, on the same terms

View Royal, Colwood, Metchosin, the Highlands and Sooke get identical access, with no penalty for living further out along Highway 14.

Fits around school runs and shifts

The booking calendar shows each counsellor’s real open times, and a session needs only a private room, not a gap long enough to drive somewhere.

Start before you know anyone here

No referral and no family doctor needed first, which matters in a city where so many people have only recently arrived.

Not sure which kind of support fits? A free 30-minute consultation is the fastest way to find out, and it is a fine outcome if the answer is a referral somewhere else.

Before you book

Is there a public mental-health team on the West Shore, or is it all in Victoria?

There is one for the West Shore. Island Health’s Western Communities (formerly Westshore) Mental Health & Substance Use team is the single access point for adult mental-health and substance-use services in the Western Communities, and access starts with a phone call to 250-370-5799; that call also settles which team serves your address. Private counselling is a separate question: a BC Registered Clinical Counsellor can see you anywhere in the province by secure video.

Do I need a family doctor or a referral first?

No. Counselling with an RCC is accessed directly, with no referral and no diagnosis. That matters for anyone who has moved recently and has not yet found a doctor. If medication or a diagnosis might be part of the picture, 8-1-1 is a reasonable first call, and the counsellor says plainly when a physician should be involved.

I commute into Victoria. When would sessions fit?

Wherever the booking calendar shows a time that suits you; it shows each counsellor’s real open times. A session can be taken from home on a day you are not driving in, or from a closed room at work. A session from a parked car is workable. A session while driving is not, and is rescheduled rather than held.

We moved here recently. Is it too soon to start counselling?

No. A move is one of the ordinary reasons people start, and there is no need to wait and see whether things settle on their own. A free 30-minute consultation is a reasonable first step, and deciding not to go further afterwards costs nothing.

Is there a free option on the West Shore to try first?

Yes. Island Health’s Western Communities team takes calls directly and offers a same-day, single-session counselling appointment. Pacific Centre Family Services Association provides most of its funded counselling at no cost, and 8-1-1 connects to HealthLink BC at any hour. If one of those fits what you need, use it.

Can I have EMDR or couples counselling from Langford?

Yes, both by secure video, with a counsellor who offers them. For EMDR, preparation comes before any processing starts, and the hour after a session is spent at home rather than merging onto Highway 1. Couples can join from one screen at home, or from two places when one partner is still at work.

Who do I call in a crisis on the West Shore?

Call or text 9-8-8 at any hour, or call the Vancouver Island Crisis Line at 1-888-494-3888, which answers around the clock for the whole Island. For emotional support, 310-6789 needs no area code. In an emergency, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Can sessions be in Punjabi or Tagalog from the West Shore?

Yes, by secure video. Individual counselling runs in Punjabi; individual and couples sessions run in Tagalog. Both communities in Langford are small, and the counsellors who work in either language are concentrated on the mainland, so for people here video is how a session in the language happens at all. Couples work and EMDR run in English or Tagalog.

Do you see people in Colwood, View Royal, Metchosin, Highlands or Sooke?

Yes, on exactly the same terms as Langford. Every session is by secure video, so Colwood, View Royal, Metchosin, Highlands, Sooke and the rest of Vancouver Island are served the same way: a Registered Clinical Counsellor, a free 30-minute consultation first, and no travel at either end.

What does counselling cost in Langford?

From Langford, an individual session is $140 for 50 minutes, couples counselling $175 for 50 minutes and an EMDR intensive $190 for 90 minutes, and the first 30-minute consultation is free. The fee is the same anywhere in BC. Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, but whether yours does is plan-dependent, so check it for the RCC designation before the first paid session.

Who would I see in Langford?

People in Langford see Camille Granda, RCC, CCC, who works in English and Tagalog or Savneet Singh, RCC, who works in English and Punjabi. Each is a Registered Clinical Counsellor taking new clients by secure video, and the free consultation is with whichever of them you choose, so the person you meet first is the person you would work with.

Do you have an office in Langford, or is it online?

Online. There is no office in Langford or anywhere else: every session is by secure video, and the confirmation email carries the link. Nothing to install and no waiting room, so you can join from home, a parked car or a closed office in Langford.
