Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, depending on the plan, so check yours; MSP does not. Receipts are issued for every session, and the fees are published in full.
New Westminster is a small city with a large hospital. Royal Columbian is here, with Fraser Health’s Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre on the same site, and adults can refer themselves to the city’s public mental-health centre on Sixth Street. On the public side, care is unusually close to home. The city itself is not large, wedged between Burnaby, Coquitlam and the Fraser, and that is where the private side runs out.
A city this size holds only so many counsellors, and fewer again trained in one particular approach. So a search that starts in New Westminster tends to finish in Burnaby, Vancouver or Surrey, which means a SkyTrain ride or a river crossing each way, every week. Video takes the crossing out of it. A Registered Clinical Counsellor anywhere in BC is as available in Sapperton as next door.
How private is the video?
Bookings and client records are held in Cliniko, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are never recorded, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. The privacy policy sets out the rest.

Public care on the doorstep, private care over the line
The public route is close, and it is Fraser Health’s. Adults 19 and over can self-refer to the New Westminster Mental Health Centre on Sixth Street for assessment, treatment, and individual and group therapy. For something urgent that does not need a hospital bed, Fraser Health announced the Urgent Care Response Centre North at Royal Columbian in April 2025, and it takes self-referrals by phone as well as walk-ins. Both are worth using, and private counselling runs alongside them rather than instead.
The specialist is the part that is somewhere else. The Burnaby page describes people who look west and end up in the wrong public queue. From New Westminster the queue is the right one; what sits over the city line is the counsellor trained in the thing you need, whether that is trauma-focused work, EMDR or structured couples work.
Every way out crosses something. Queensborough sits on Lulu Island, across the Fraser from the rest of the city. Surrey is over the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge that replaced the Pattullo. Burnaby and Vancouver are a SkyTrain ride. None of those is far. Each is the part of a weekly appointment that has to be repeated in both directions, every week, after a working day.
A hospital city keeps a roster. Royal Columbian runs around the clock, and for anyone on a rotating roster there, or in the services around it, a fixed weekly slot rarely survives the schedule. The page for healthcare and shift workers covers what tends to come up, and the booking calendar shows each counsellor’s real open times.
Douglas College has a campus here, on Royal Avenue. Registered students in credit courses can see a college counsellor at no charge, and that is the right place to start. Where it is not the right fit, counselling for university and college students sets out how private sessions sit alongside a student plan.
Tagalog is the city’s most common mother tongue after English. In the 2021 Census 3,270 New Westminster residents gave Tagalog as their mother tongue, 4.2% of the city, ahead of Mandarin and Punjabi and a larger share than in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey or Richmond. Punjabi was the mother tongue of 2,810. Tagalog-speaking counselling in New Westminster and Punjabi-speaking counselling in New Westminster say what each means for sessions.
Why virtual, specifically here
What changes when distance stops mattering
No bridge, no SkyTrain transfer
From Queensborough, Sapperton or Uptown, the session starts in the room you are already in, with no crossing either side of it.
Not limited to the city limits
A small city holds a handful of private practices. The search can run across every registered counsellor in British Columbia instead.
Queensborough on the same terms
The island side of the city gets identical access, along with Sapperton, Uptown, Queen’s Park, Brow of the Hill and Connaught Heights.
Fits a hospital roster
Sessions can be grouped into the weeks a roster leaves free, with a pause agreed in advance for the heavy stretches.
Not sure which kind of support fits? A free 30-minute consultation is the fastest way to find out, and it is a fine outcome if the answer is a referral somewhere else.

Before you book
Which health authority covers New Westminster?
Fraser Health. Adults 19 and over can refer themselves to the New Westminster Mental Health Centre on Sixth Street, with no doctor’s referral. None of that affects seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor privately, and the two can run side by side.
Burnaby and Vancouver are close. Why not go in person?
If an in-person counsellor a SkyTrain ride away suits you, that is a reasonable choice. The difficulty is rarely the distance on a map. It is the crossing every week, on top of a working day, and a missed crossing is a missed session. By video there is no crossing to miss.
I live in Queensborough. Is that any different?
No. Queensborough is part of New Westminster on the far side of the Fraser, and sessions by secure video reach it exactly as they reach Sapperton or Uptown. Being on the island side changes nothing about access or fee.
I work rotating shifts at the hospital. Can sessions fit?
Yes, if it is planned for at the start. Sessions booked in blocks around a roster, with agreed gaps, keep the thread of the work better than a weekly slot that keeps being cancelled. The booking calendar shows each counsellor’s real open times.
Is there something free I should look at first?
Yes. Fraser Health’s mental health centre on Sixth Street takes self-referrals from adults, the Fraser Health Crisis Line answers at 604-951-8855, 310-6789 connects to mental-health support anywhere in BC, and 8-1-1 reaches HealthLink BC. Douglas College students in credit courses can see a college counsellor at no charge. The low-cost counselling page lists more. If one of those fits, use it.
Can I have EMDR or couples therapy from New Westminster?
Yes, by secure video. EMDR by video keeps its preparation and pacing, and the way bilateral stimulation is delivered on screen is explained and practised before any processing. For couples, each partner can join from wherever they are, which is often what makes a shared hour possible at all.
Can sessions be in Tagalog or Punjabi from New Westminster?
Yes, each with the counsellor who speaks it. In a city where Tagalog is the most common mother tongue after English, Tagalog sessions cover individual counselling, couples work and EMDR. Punjabi sessions are individual counselling only, and couples work and EMDR run in English or Tagalog. Switching into English partway through is normal either way.
Do you see people in Queensborough, Sapperton, Uptown, Queen’s Park, Brow of the Hill or Connaught Heights?
Yes, on exactly the same terms as New Westminster. Every session is by secure video, so Queensborough, Sapperton, Uptown, Queen’s Park, Brow of the Hill, Connaught Heights and the rest of Metro Vancouver are served the same way: a Registered Clinical Counsellor, a free 30-minute consultation first, and no travel at either end.
What does counselling cost in New Westminster?
From New Westminster, an individual session is $140 for 50 minutes, couples counselling $175 for 50 minutes and an EMDR intensive $190 for 90 minutes, and the first 30-minute consultation is free. The fee is the same anywhere in BC. Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, but whether yours does is plan-dependent, so check it for the RCC designation before the first paid session.
Who would I see in New Westminster?
People in New Westminster see Camille Granda, RCC, CCC, who works in English and Tagalog or Savneet Singh, RCC, who works in English and Punjabi. Each is a Registered Clinical Counsellor taking new clients by secure video, and the free consultation is with whichever of them you choose, so the person you meet first is the person you would work with.
Do you have an office in New Westminster, or is it online?
Online. There is no office in New Westminster or anywhere else: every session is by secure video, and the confirmation email carries the link. Nothing to install and no waiting room, so you can join from home, a parked car or a closed office in New Westminster.
