EMDR Therapy in Vancouver, BC
Vancouver has EMDR-trained clinicians; what it does not have is many with an opening this month.
EMDR is not rare in Vancouver in the sense that it is rare in most of the province — trained clinicians exist here in numbers. The constraint is different: EMDR tends to be offered by practitioners who are already established, which means the search usually ends in a waitlist rather than in an absence.
It is also a modality where the schedule matters more than usual. EMDR processing works best with a predictable rhythm, and a session that has to be moved because of traffic is more disruptive here than it would be in ordinary talk therapy. Removing the journey removes the most common reason the rhythm breaks.
Sessions are $140 for 50 minutes and start with a free 15-minute video call — no charge, no card, and no obligation to book anything afterwards. Fees and extended-health cover are set out in full.
Getting counselling in Vancouver
Vancouver has more counsellors per resident than anywhere else in the province, and the constraint is almost never distance — it is that the ones taking new clients are booked, and the commute to a downtown or Kitsilano office at 5pm costs more time than the session itself.
There is no shortage of private practices here. What there is a shortage of is openings: the practices with the strongest reputations tend to hold waitlists, and a clinic that can see you this month is often one you found because nobody else could take you.
Public mental-health intake for Vancouver runs through Vancouver Coastal Health. That route matters if you are seeking publicly funded care. It has no bearing on seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor privately, which needs no referral and no diagnosis — see how RCCs, psychologists and social workers differ.
Removing the commute is not a small convenience in this city. A 50-minute session that costs ninety minutes of travel either side is the appointment people quietly stop attending around week six.

What eMDR Therapy involves
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-supported therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their grip. You don't have to relive everything in detail or explain it perfectly — EMDR works with how memory is stored, not just how it's told. Available online across BC, including a 90-minute intensive format.
What it is commonly used for
- Trauma and PTSD
- Distressing or intrusive memories
- Anxiety and panic
- Grief and loss
- Intergenerational and cultural trauma
Your counsellor is EMDR-trained and works in a paced, trauma-informed way — we build safety and stability first, and never move faster than you're ready for. EMDR translates well to virtual sessions, and many people find the comfort of their own space helps the work.
The full picture — how sessions are structured, what the first one is like, and what it does not do — is on the eMDR Therapy page. If you are still working out what you need, the short questionnaire is a quicker route than reading all of them, and what to expect in a first session covers the part most people are actually nervous about.
Questions from Vancouver
Does EMDR actually work over video?
The bilateral stimulation is delivered on screen or through self-administered tapping, both of which are established remote protocols. What matters more is preparation and pacing, and neither of those depends on being in the same room.
Do I need to have a formal PTSD diagnosis?
No. EMDR is used with a range of distressing memories and stuck patterns, many of which never attract a diagnosis and do not need one to be worth working on.
