Depression Counselling in Vancouver, BC

Grieving a future that got priced out is not the same as failing at it.

A particular version of low mood shows up in Vancouver: people who are working hard, earning reasonably, and watching the life they assumed they were building become arithmetically impossible. The house, the space, the timeline for children. That is a real loss rather than a distorted thought, and treating it as faulty thinking is both wrong and insulting.

What the work can do is separate the grief, which is proportionate, from what has grown around it — the withdrawal, the comparison, the conclusion that the shortfall is a personal failure rather than a market. The first is worked with. The second is what tends to be doing the damage.

Sessions are $140 for 50 minutes and start with a free 15-minute video call — no charge, no card, and no obligation to book anything afterwards. Fees and extended-health cover are set out in full.

Getting counselling in Vancouver

Vancouver has more counsellors per resident than anywhere else in the province, and the constraint is almost never distance — it is that the ones taking new clients are booked, and the commute to a downtown or Kitsilano office at 5pm costs more time than the session itself.

There is no shortage of private practices here. What there is a shortage of is openings: the practices with the strongest reputations tend to hold waitlists, and a clinic that can see you this month is often one you found because nobody else could take you.

A stylised map of British Columbia with a central video-session hub linked by dotted lines to Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Surrey, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria, showing that sessions reach every region of the province.
Anywhere in BC includes Vancouver. There is no catchment, because there is no office.

Public mental-health intake for Vancouver runs through Vancouver Coastal Health. That route matters if you are seeking publicly funded care. It has no bearing on seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor privately, which needs no referral and no diagnosis — see how RCCs, psychologists and social workers differ.

Removing the commute is not a small convenience in this city. A 50-minute session that costs ninety minutes of travel either side is the appointment people quietly stop attending around week six.

What depression Counselling involves

Depression is often described as sadness and is more often an absence — of energy, of interest, of the sense that any of it matters. It gets called laziness by the person experiencing it more than by anybody else.

What it is commonly used for

  • Low mood that has outlasted whatever started it
  • Losing interest in things that used to matter
  • Exhaustion that sleep does not touch
  • Harsh, constant self-criticism
  • Withdrawing from people, then feeling worse for being alone
  • Winters that are consistently harder than the rest of the year

Depression removes the energy required to do the things that lift it, which is why advice fails. The work starts small and concrete, restores movement before insight, and looks at what is maintaining the low rather than only at how it feels.

Two overlapping circles. Burnout is tied to a specific context and often lifts on extended leave; depression is present across contexts. Shared features include exhaustion, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating and withdrawal.
Overlapping symptoms, different reach.

The full picture — how sessions are structured, what the first one is like, and what it does not do — is on the depression Counselling page. If you are still working out what you need, the short questionnaire is a quicker route than reading all of them, and what to expect in a first session covers the part most people are actually nervous about.

Questions from Vancouver

Is it depression if my situation is genuinely difficult?

It can be both. A reasonable response to hard circumstances and a depressive pattern can run at the same time, and the second is the part that responds to this work.

Will I be told to think positively?

No. Reframing a real constraint as an attitude problem is neither accurate nor useful, and it is not what happens here.
