How private is the video?
Bookings and client records are held in Cliniko, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are never recorded, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. The privacy policy sets out the rest.
A small city, an older population, and a border
Small enough that discretion is a real constraint. In a city this size the ordinary privacy of a counselling office is thinner than it looks. Being seen going in is not paranoia. It is arithmetic. A virtual practice has no doorway to be noticed at, which for some people here is the difference between starting and not.
An older population needs different work, not gentler work. Grief, retirement, chronic illness and caregiver exhaustion are the substance of a great deal of counselling on the Peninsula, and they are frequently treated as things to be endured rather than worked on. South Surrey is next door, and is not the same thing. White Rock is its own municipality entirely surrounded by Surrey, and residents move between the two without thinking about it, but the services, the intake queues and the counsellor listings are organised by boundaries that do not match how anyone actually lives here. Public intake runs through Fraser Health. Not Vancouver Coastal, despite the Metro Vancouver address. For the Peninsula the public door is the White Rock/South Surrey Mental Health and Substance Use Centre at 15521 Russell Avenue, which takes adults 19 and over and accepts a self-referral. Is it better to look for someone local?
Sometimes, and you would be told so on a consultation call. A counsellor you can drive to suits plenty of people. What a local option costs in a city this small is the privacy question, and White Rock has few enough counsellors that "local" frequently means Surrey or Langley anyway, at which point the drive is buying you nothing.
