Trauma Therapy in Victoria, BC

A large service and veteran population, and a specific reluctance to be seen using local services.

Greater Victoria holds a substantial naval, military and veteran population, and with it a particular reluctance: a real concern about career consequences, and about being recognised in a waiting room by somebody who works alongside you. Whether or not that concern is justified in a given case, it reliably delays people from getting help, sometimes by years.

Distance solves the visibility problem completely. There is no local waiting room, no car outside a building, and no chance of meeting a colleague on the way in — which for this population is frequently the difference between starting and continuing to manage it alone.

Sessions are $140 for 50 minutes and start with a free 15-minute video call — no charge, no card, and no obligation to book anything afterwards. Fees and extended-health cover are set out in full.

Getting counselling in Victoria

Victoria is a ferry or a flight from the mainland, which means the specialist pool is genuinely bounded rather than merely inconvenient. If the practitioner you need is in Vancouver, "going to see them" is a day.

Island Health runs public intake, and the private sector in Greater Victoria is active but finite. When a specific approach is not represented on the Island, the fallback has historically been to travel or to go without.

A stylised map of British Columbia with a central video-session hub linked by dotted lines to Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Surrey, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria, showing that sessions reach every region of the province.
Anywhere in BC includes Victoria. There is no catchment, because there is no office.

Public mental-health intake for Victoria runs through Island Health. That route matters if you are seeking publicly funded care. It has no bearing on seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor privately, which needs no referral and no diagnosis — see how RCCs, psychologists and social workers differ.

The strait stops being a factor. Virtual care is the one arrangement where being on the Island costs nothing at all in access.

What trauma Therapy involves

Trauma is not only the events people expect to count. It is anything that overwhelmed you at the time and did not finish being processed — which is why it can follow a single incident, a childhood, or a job you were good at.

What it is commonly used for

  • A memory that intrudes, or a stretch of time that will not come back at all
  • Reactions out of proportion to what is in front of you
  • Feeling numb, distant, or watching yourself from outside
  • Sleep, nightmares, and a body that will not settle
  • What got carried down through a family rather than happening to you
  • Vicarious trauma from work — healthcare, first response, care

Pacing first. Nothing here starts with the hardest thing: the early sessions build enough safety and enough control that the harder work is possible, and you decide what gets approached and when. EMDR is one of the tools, not the whole of it.

Three stacked bands describing nervous-system states: hyperarousal above the window, the window of tolerance where thinking and feeling work together, and hypoarousal below it.
Therapy works inside the middle band — which is why capacity is built before memory is opened.

The full picture — how sessions are structured, what the first one is like, and what it does not do — is on the trauma Therapy page. If you are still working out what you need, the short questionnaire is a quicker route than reading all of them, and what to expect in a first session covers the part most people are actually nervous about.

Questions from Victoria

Will this affect my career or my file?

This is a private practice and nothing is reported anywhere. The limits of confidentiality are set out on the standards page and they are narrow, specific, and the same as they would be anywhere.

Are Saanich, Esquimalt and Sooke covered?

Yes, on identical terms. Nothing about the service depends on where in the region you are.
