Updated October 2, 2026

Vancouver Coastal Health’s Central Intake Team is the public route for adults on the North Shore, and it asks for a referral from a family doctor or a walk-in clinic before it gets in touch. Depression works directly against that kind of sequence: find a clinic, explain it to somebody new, then wait for a call. Each step is reasonable, and each is one more task on the days when tasks are the problem.

Two shorter routes are worth knowing. The North Vancouver Urgent and Primary Care Centre treats low mood and depression as same-day concerns, and a private Registered Clinical Counsellor needs no referral at all. Neither replaces the other, and the second can begin while the first is still being arranged.

Sessions are $140 for 50 minutes and start with a free 30-minute video call, no charge, no card, and no obligation to book anything afterwards. Many BC extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor; whether yours does is plan-dependent. Fees and extended-health cover are set out in full.

Getting counselling on the North Shore

The North Shore reaches the rest of Metro Vancouver by two road bridges and the SeaBus, and in the 2021 Census about two in three of its commuters with a usual workplace worked outside the municipality they live in. An appointment across Burrard Inlet adds a crossing to both ends of the session.

Vancouver Coastal Health’s Central Intake Team at the HOpe Centre, on the Lions Gate Hospital campus, is the public door for adults on the Shore, and it asks for a referral from a family doctor or walk-in clinic first. Private counselling is booked directly, but a search for a particular approach can widen to Vancouver, and so to a crossing.

Anywhere in BC includes North Vancouver. There is no catchment, because there is no office.

Public mental-health intake for North Vancouver runs through Vancouver Coastal Health. That route matters if you are seeking publicly funded care. It has no bearing on seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor privately, which needs no referral and no diagnosis. See how RCCs, psychologists and social workers differ.

The crossing stops being part of the appointment. Nothing about a session depends on how the Lions Gate or the Ironworkers is moving that day, or on catching a sailing from Bowen.

What depression counselling involves

Depression is often described as sadness and is more often an absence: of energy, of interest, of the sense that any of it matters. It gets called laziness by the person experiencing it more than by anybody else.

What it is commonly used for

  • Low mood that has outlasted whatever started it
  • Losing interest in things that used to matter
  • Exhaustion that sleep does not touch
  • Harsh, constant self-criticism
  • Withdrawing from people, then feeling worse for being alone
  • Winters that are consistently harder than the rest of the year

Depression removes the energy required to do the things that lift it, which is why advice fails. The work starts small and concrete, restores movement before insight, and looks at what is maintaining the low rather than only at how it feels.

Overlapping symptoms, different reach.

The full picture: how sessions are structured, what the first one is like, and what it does not do, is on the page for online depression counselling across BC. If you are still working out what you need, the short questionnaire is a quicker route than reading all of them, and what to expect in a first session covers the part most people are actually nervous about.
