A small community, two crossings from the large one
North Shore residents whose mother tongue is Punjabi, across the City and District of North Vancouver and West Vancouver. A small community, and a dispersed one
Statistics Canada, Census Profile, 2021 Census: North Vancouver, City (CY), British Columbia
In the 2021 census, 335 residents of the City of North Vancouver, 310 in the District and 100 in West Vancouver gave Punjabi as their mother tongue. Fewer speak it most often at home: 355 across the three. South Asian residents number about 6,285 on the Shore, a much larger group than the Punjabi speakers within it.
The North Shore’s larger language communities are elsewhere. Persian is the most common mother tongue after English across the three municipalities, and Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Cantonese and Tagalog each have more than three times as many speakers as Punjabi.
This page states that size rather than inflating it. A community this small cannot count on a Punjabi-speaking counsellor down the road, and the province’s large Punjabi-speaking community, with its clinicians and institutions, is in Surrey: across Burrard Inlet, the length of the city, and the Fraser.
When somebody on the North Shore looks for a counsellor who speaks Punjabi in person, the search tends to lead toward Surrey, where the province’s largest Punjabi-speaking community lives. That means the Lions Gate or the Ironworkers, the length of Vancouver or Burnaby, and a second river crossing, then all of it again on the way home. For a weekly appointment, that arithmetic is what quietly ends a course of counselling.
Small has its own privacy problem. In a community this size, people tend to know each other’s families, and the chance that a Punjabi-speaking professional nearby is a friend of a friend is real. A practice outside that network, by video, removes the overlap without asking you to explain why you wanted it removed.
Vancouver Coastal Health’s Central Intake Team on the Lions Gate Hospital campus is the public door for adults on the Shore, and it asks for a referral from a family doctor or walk-in clinic. Vancouver Coastal Health offers free interpreting. Counselling held in Punjabi is a different thing from counselling held through an interpreter, and it is worth knowing which one you are being offered.
The rest of the North Shore picture, the bridges, Bowen Island and the referral step, is on online counselling for North Vancouver. Punjabi counselling for Vancouver makes a related argument for a larger community across the inlet.
Why virtual, specifically here
What changes when language stops being the barrier
No trip to Surrey
An in-person appointment in Surrey means two crossings each way from the North Shore. Sessions here happen wherever you have a private room.
Punjabi, English, or both
Sessions move between the two as the conversation needs. Clinical and insurance terms usually stay in English, because those are the words people actually use for them.
Outside the community network
In a small community, distance is what makes confidentiality feel true as well as be true.
One-to-one sessions
Punjabi-language counselling here is individual counselling. Couples sessions and EMDR currently run in English or Tagalog.
Not sure whether this is the right fit? A free 30-minute consultation is the fastest way to find out, and it is a perfectly good outcome if the answer turns out to be a referral somewhere else.
Questions from North Vancouver
Before you book
Is the Punjabi-speaking community on the North Shore really that small?
Yes, by the census. 745 people across the City of North Vancouver, the District and West Vancouver gave Punjabi as their mother tongue in 2021, about 0.4% of the Shore. That is the reason the page exists rather than a reason against it: a small community is the one services are least often built around.
Can the whole session be in Punjabi?
Yes. Sessions run in Punjabi, in English, or moving between the two, whichever the moment calls for. Many people switch without planning to, often into Punjabi when the subject is family, and that is normal rather than something to correct.
Can my partner and I come together for sessions in Punjabi?
Not at the moment: couples sessions currently run in English or Tagalog. Individual counselling is available in Punjabi.
Will my extended health cover this?
Plans that list an RCC usually reimburse a video session on the same terms as in person, but this depends on the plan. Ask: are virtual sessions with an RCC eligible, and on the same maximum?
