# Online counselling and therapy in Vancouver, BC

Online counselling for people in Vancouver is with Camille Granda or Savneet Singh, both Registered Clinical Counsellors, by secure video in English, Punjabi or Tagalog depending on the counsellor, with a free 15-minute consultation and no referral needed.

Online counselling in Vancouver is booked directly with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, by secure video: no referral, a free 15-minute consultation first, and no trip across town, in a city whose public front door does not offer counselling.

Also serving East Vancouver, Kitsilano, the West End and the rest of Lower Mainland, by the same video sessions.

Many [extended health plans](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/does-my-plan-cover-counselling-bc) reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, depending on the plan, so check yours; MSP does not. Receipts are issued for every session, and the [fees](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/pricing) are published in full. On a calendar-year plan, sessions held by 31 December count against this year: [using benefits before the plan year ends](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/counselling-benefits-before-year-end-bc).

Online or virtual therapy in Vancouver works the same way from Kitsilano as from East Vancouver: a scheduled 50-minute session by secure video with a [Registered Clinical Counsellor](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/compare/rcc-vs-psychologist-vs-social-worker-bc), booked yourself from the counsellor's calendar. An individual session is $140, after a free 15-minute consultation. Most people arrive with a particular reason in mind: [depression counselling and therapy in Vancouver](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/online-counselling/vancouver/depression-counselling), anxiety and trauma each have a page of their own below.

Vancouver has more counsellors than any other city in British Columbia, and it is still where people most often report giving up on finding one. The constraint is not supply. It is where the public route sends you, what a weekly fee competes with, and the time a cross-town appointment really takes.

## How private is the video?

Bookings and client records are held in **Cliniko**, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are **never recorded**, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. ## Where counselling in Vancouver starts, and what gets in the way

**The public front door does not offer counselling.** Vancouver Coastal Health's Access and Assessment Centre, in the Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre on the Vancouver General Hospital campus, is where City of Vancouver residents aged 17 and over start with public mental-health and substance-use care: call 604-675-3700 or walk in, with no referral. It assesses, connects people to VCH services and handles crises, and it is worth using for those. Its own page lists counselling, and referral to counselling, among the services it does not provide. Counselling itself is found through a community agency, a workplace program or a private counsellor, and [free and low-cost counselling in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/low-cost-counselling-bc) lists the first two.

**Cost against the cost of living.** In a city where rent already takes an outsized share of income, a $140 weekly session is a real decision rather than an obvious one, and treating it as one would be dishonest. Therapy competes with rent here in a way it does not in most of the province, which is why it is worth checking [what your extended health plan reimburses](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/bc-extended-health-coverage-for-counselling) before deciding you cannot afford it.

**Language access is quietly harder here than the city's reputation suggests.** Vancouver is one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the country, but Punjabi is only the fifth mother tongue at 2.0%, well behind Cantonese and Mandarin, so services offered "in your language" here usually are not. [Punjabi-speaking counselling for Vancouver](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/punjabi-counselling/vancouver) covers what that means in practice, and why the answer has historically been a trip to Surrey.

**Time and geography.** A 50-minute session that means crossing the city at rush hour is not a 50-minute commitment; it is closer to two hours. That is the single most common reason people book therapy and then quietly stop going. Removing the travel changes the arithmetic: the session is the fifty minutes and nothing else.

**Isolation in density.** Vancouver has a well-documented reputation for being a hard city to make friends in, particularly for people who moved here as adults. A great deal of what comes up in this work is not a diagnosable condition at all. It is loneliness in a place where everyone appears to have arrived with their social life already assembled.

[![A stylised map of British Columbia with a central video-session hub linked by dotted lines to Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Surrey, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria, showing that sessions reach every region of the province.](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/bc-reach.svg) (full size, opens in a new tab)](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/bc-reach.svg)

Every region of the province, from one virtual practice.

Why virtual, specifically here

## What changes when distance stops mattering

### No commute attached to the session

In a city where cross-town travel can double the time cost of an appointment, this is usually what determines whether people keep going.

### A session from work, without explaining an absence

A closed office, a booked meeting room or a parked car is entirely workable, at whichever of the calendar's open times suits you.

### It follows you

Moving within BC, common here, does not mean starting again with someone new.

### The North Shore has its own page

[North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Bowen Island and Lions Bay](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/online-counselling/north-vancouver) have their own public intake team, on the Lions Gate Hospital campus, and a page of their own.

Not sure which kind of support fits? A [free 15-minute consultation](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/book) is the fastest way to find out, and it is a fine outcome if the answer is a referral somewhere else.

Questions from Vancouver

## Choice, cost, and the isolation nobody expects

Vancouver has more counsellors per capita than anywhere else in the province, which produces a different problem: not scarcity but selection. Choosing between several hundred profiles is difficult, and a great many people stall at exactly that point. [How to find a therapist in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/guides/how-to-find-a-therapist-in-bc) and [questions worth asking a therapist](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/guides/questions-to-ask-a-therapist) are written for that stall specifically.

The second Vancouver-specific factor is cost pressure. Housing costs mean discretionary spending is genuinely constrained even at high incomes, and counselling frequently competes with rent rather than with leisure. That makes the funding routes worth knowing before paying privately, [EFAP vs private counselling](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/compare/efap-vs-private-counselling) and [low-cost counselling in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/low-cost-counselling-bc).

The third is the thing residents mention most and outsiders least expect: it is a difficult city to make friends in. Whatever the reasons, adult loneliness here is common, under-discussed, and a significant contributor to low mood, and it is a legitimate reason to book something, rather than a personal failing to be managed privately.

Removing the commute matters here as much as anywhere. A cross-town appointment in rush hour is a two-hour commitment; a session from a home office is fifty minutes.

[![A four-step diagram: a free fifteen-minute video consultation, an intake form sent before the session, the fifty-minute first session covering history and goals, and a decision at the end about whether and how often to continue.](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/first-session-flow.svg) (full size, opens in a new tab)](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/first-session-flow.svg)

The path from first contact to the end of session one.

## Before you book

**Is this the same as virtual counselling or telehealth?**

Yes. Online counselling, virtual counselling, virtual therapy and telehealth all describe the same thing here: a scheduled session by secure video with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, from wherever in Vancouver or beyond you are. The only word that would mean something different is in-person, which this practice does not offer.

**Does ICBC cover counselling after a crash in Vancouver?**

ICBC funds counselling after a motor vehicle crash in BC regardless of fault, with an initial block of sessions pre-approved and no doctor's referral needed. Whether it pays a counsellor directly depends on whether they are in ICBC's Recovery Network; this practice is not, so you would pay at booking and ask ICBC, in writing, whether it reimburses receipts from a qualified counsellor outside the network. The ICBC counselling page sets out how to open the claim and what is covered.

**Is virtual therapy cheaper than in-person?**

Fees here are the same either way. What virtual removes is the surrounding cost: transit or parking, and the hour or more of travel that an in-person appointment adds to a working day.

**I have extended health through work. Will it cover this?**

Many plans that list Registered Clinical Counsellors will, depending on the plan. Some list only psychologists and social workers, so it is worth checking the exact wording, the extended health coverage page explains what to look for.

**What if I cannot afford private fees?**

Vancouver Coastal Health runs free mental-health services, and there is a broader set of free and low-cost options across BC worth checking before paying out of pocket. Those are listed on the free and low-cost counselling page.

**Is there counselling in Vancouver without a waitlist?**

Not through the public front door, because it does not offer counselling: Vancouver Coastal Health's Access and Assessment Centre assesses and connects people to VCH services, and lists counselling among what it does not provide. Free community programs usually keep a list of their own. A private counsellor books from their own calendar, so the wait is simply the next open time; the line under the button at the top of this page shows the next open consultation times here. [How long the wait is in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/guides/waiting-for-therapy-in-bc) compares every route.

**Can I have sessions in Punjabi without going to Surrey?**

Yes, and that is most of why the Vancouver Punjabi page exists. Punjabi is the fifth mother tongue in Vancouver proper and the community's clinicians and institutions are largely across the river, so the historic answer has been a bridge and a long trip each way. Sessions here run in Punjabi, English, or moving between them, from wherever you are.

**I just moved here and do not know anyone. Is that a reason to come?**

Yes, and it is one of the more common ones. Vancouver has a well-documented reputation as a hard city to build a social life in, particularly for people who arrived as adults, and a great deal of what comes up in this work is not a diagnosable condition at all. It is loneliness in a place where everyone appears to have arrived with their friendships already assembled. That is worth working on rather than waiting out.

**Does a session have to be from home? I have roommates.**

No, and in this city that question comes up constantly. A closed office, a booked meeting room, a parked car, all of them work, and headphones do more for privacy than most people expect. It is worth raising on the consultation call so it is solved before the first session rather than during it.

**Do you see people in East Vancouver, Kitsilano or the West End?**

Yes, on exactly the same terms as Vancouver. Every session is by secure video, so East Vancouver, Kitsilano, the West End and the rest of Lower Mainland are served the same way: a Registered Clinical Counsellor, a free 15-minute consultation first, and no travel at either end.

**Who would I see in Vancouver?**

People in Vancouver see Camille Granda, RCC, CCC, who works in English and Tagalog or Savneet Singh, RCC, who works in English and Punjabi. Each is a Registered Clinical Counsellor taking new clients by secure video, and the free consultation is with whichever of them you choose, so the person you meet first is the person you would work with.

**Do you have an office in Vancouver, or is it online?**

Online. There is no office in Vancouver or anywhere else: every session is by secure video, and the confirmation email carries the link. Nothing to install and no waiting room, so you can join from home, a parked car or a closed office in Vancouver.
