Many [extended health plans](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/does-my-plan-cover-counselling-bc) reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, depending on the plan, so check yours; MSP does not. Receipts are issued for every session, and the [fees](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/pricing) are published in full. On a calendar-year plan, sessions held by 31 December count against this year: [using benefits before the plan year ends](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/counselling-benefits-before-year-end-bc).

If you live in Prince George and have tried to find a counsellor, you may already know the shape of the problem: openings vary, and a wait for a psychiatrist or specialist can be long. That is not a failure of effort on anyone's part; it is what distance does to a health region the size of the north.

Virtual counselling does not shorten that distance. What it does is remove distance from the equation entirely. A [Registered Clinical Counsellor](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/compare/rcc-vs-psychologist-vs-social-worker-bc) working out of the Lower Mainland is exactly as available to you in Prince George as to someone in Burnaby: same 50-minute session, same secure platform, same [BCACC](https://bcacc.ca) code of ethics. Anxiety is the reason most often searched from here, and [anxiety therapy in Prince George](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/online-counselling/prince-george/anxiety-counselling) has a page of its own.

## How private is the video?

Bookings and client records are held in **Cliniko**, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are **never recorded**, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. The [privacy policy](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/privacy) sets out the rest.

## What access actually looks like here

The gap is documented, not anecdotal. In February 2026 the Canadian Mental Health Association's Northern BC branch reported that its no-barrier counselling program in Prince George, funded as a Northern Health pilot, had supported **103 clients across 519 appointments in ten months and still carried a waitlist of 30 people**. The program paused on 31 March 2026 when the pilot funding concluded.

One program’s waitlist is not the whole picture, and openings at other practices vary. The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors’ directory shows who is taking clients in and around Prince George.

None of that means there is nothing available. Northern Health runs mental-health and substance-use services in Prince George: assessment, treatment, counselling, education and referral: delivered in person, by phone, and by video. If you are already connected to those services, staying connected to them is worth doing. Private virtual counselling is a parallel option, not a replacement, and it is most useful when the wait for a public service is longer than you can comfortably hold, or when you want continuity that does not depend on a pilot's funding cycle.

Those figures describe counselling in English. Add the requirement that the counsellor speak Punjabi and the choice near Prince George narrows again. [Punjabi-speaking counselling for Prince George](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/punjabi-counselling/prince-george) covers that specifically, with the local numbers.

Every region of the province, from one virtual practice.

Why virtual, specifically here

## What changes when distance stops mattering

### No drive, no weather

Sessions happen wherever you have a private room and a connection. January in the north stops being a scheduling problem.

### Continuity if you move or travel

Work camps, rotations, and moves within BC do not interrupt the work. The practice’s counsellors are registered to see clients anywhere in the province.

### Punjabi-language sessions

Sessions can run in Punjabi by video from anywhere in Northern BC, so the language does not depend on who practises nearby.

Not sure which kind of support fits? A [free 15-minute consultation](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/book) is the fastest way to find out, and it is a fine outcome if the answer is a referral somewhere else.

Questions from Prince George

## What virtual access actually changes in the north

Northern Health covers roughly two-thirds of the province’s land area for a small fraction of its population, so the distances between communities are long, and choosing a counsellor by approach or language can also mean choosing by drive time. A virtual practice does not change who practises locally; it adds counsellors from across BC to the choice, without the drive. BCACC’s [Find a Counsellor](https://bc-counsellors.org/counsellors/) directory shows who practises nearby.

It also removes the small-community confidentiality problem, which is a larger obstacle than it is usually credited as being. Where everyone knows everyone, being seen entering a counselling office is itself a disclosure, and the counsellor available may have a connection to your family or your workplace. A counsellor elsewhere in the province is genuinely anonymous in a way a local one cannot be.

The constraints are real too, and worth naming. Connectivity is variable, which is why sessions can run with the camera off to cut the bandwidth a connection has to carry. Winter isolation and limited daylight are genuine contributors to low mood at this latitude, see [low mood through a BC winter](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/guides/low-mood-through-a-bc-winter). And rotational and camp work is common in the region, which makes scheduling the first thing to solve rather than an afterthought; [counselling for rotational and camp workers](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/for/rotational-and-camp-workers) covers that directly.

## Before you book

**Can a counsellor in the Lower Mainland legally see me in Prince George?**

Yes. Registration applies province-wide, so a BC-based Registered Clinical Counsellor can work with clients anywhere in British Columbia by secure video. The same ethical, legal, and privacy standards apply as they would in person.

**Is virtual counselling actually as good as sitting in a room with someone?**

For the concerns most people bring: anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulty. The research on video-delivered therapy shows outcomes broadly comparable to in-person work. There are real trade-offs, and they are worth talking through on a consultation. There is a fuller answer in the guide on whether online therapy is as effective as in-person.

**What if I am in crisis tonight?**

Westpeak Wellness is not a crisis service and cannot respond to emergencies. Call or text 9-8-8 (Canada, 24/7), or 310-6789 for BC Mental Health Support. No area code needed. In immediate danger, call 911.

**I am on a Northern Health waitlist already. Should I come off it?**

No, stay on it. Public and private care are not mutually exclusive, and the public services are worth keeping regardless of what you do here. Private virtual counselling is most useful as something that starts now rather than something that replaces what you are waiting for. If the public service comes through and suits you better, that is a good outcome.

**I work a camp rotation. Can I have sessions from site?**

Often yes, and it is worth testing the connection before booking rather than discovering it mid-session. Camp internet varies enormously. Turning the camera off cuts the bandwidth a session needs considerably, and scheduling around a rotation, blocks with gaps rather than the same weekday for six months, is the normal pattern here rather than the exception.

**Is there free counselling in Prince George?**

Some, and it is worth trying first. Foundry Prince George on 7th Avenue offers free, confidential drop-in counselling for young people aged 12 to 24. CMHA Northern BC's no-barrier counselling program paused on 31 March 2026 when its pilot funding ended, and the branch says it is seeking new funding. Northern Health's mental-health and substance-use services are free, and some are reached through a family doctor or nurse practitioner. [Free and low-cost counselling across BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/low-cost-counselling-bc) lists the province-wide options, including Here2Talk for students.

**Winter here is long. Does that actually come up in counselling?**

Frequently, and it is not a small thing. Prince George gets meaningfully less daylight in December than the south coast, and low mood that arrives every year on roughly the same schedule is a real pattern rather than a character flaw. It responds to treatment, and it is worth naming rather than waiting out.

**Do you see people in Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Mackenzie, Terrace or Prince Rupert?**

Yes, on exactly the same terms as Prince George. Every session is by secure video, so Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Mackenzie, Terrace, Prince Rupert and the rest of Northern BC are served the same way: a Registered Clinical Counsellor, a free 15-minute consultation first, and no travel at either end.

**What does counselling cost in Prince George?**

From Prince George, an individual session is $140 for 50 minutes, couples counselling $175 for 50 minutes and an EMDR intensive $190 for 90 minutes, and the first 15-minute consultation is free. The fee is the same anywhere in BC. Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, but whether yours does is plan-dependent, so check it for the RCC designation before the first paid session.

**Who would I see in Prince George?**

People in Prince George see Camille Granda, RCC, CCC, who works in English and Tagalog or Savneet Singh, RCC, who works in English and Punjabi. Each is a Registered Clinical Counsellor taking new clients by secure video, and the free consultation is with whichever of them you choose, so the person you meet first is the person you would work with.

**Do you have an office in Prince George, or is it online?**

Online. There is no office in Prince George or anywhere else: every session is by secure video, and the confirmation email carries the link. Nothing to install and no waiting room, so you can join from home, a parked car or a closed office in Prince George.
