# Online counselling in Kamloops, BC

Online counselling for people in Kamloops is with Camille Granda or Savneet Singh, both Registered Clinical Counsellors, by secure video in English, Punjabi or Tagalog depending on the counsellor, with a free 15-minute consultation and no referral needed.

Kamloops is where the region's services are, which means everyone else in the region drives here for them.

Also serving Merritt, Salmon Arm, Chase, Sun Peaks, Logan Lake, Clearwater, Revelstoke, 100 Mile House, Williams Lake and the rest of Thompson-Nicola, by the same video sessions.

Many [extended health plans](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/does-my-plan-cover-counselling-bc) reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, depending on the plan, so check yours; MSP does not. Receipts are issued for every session, and the [fees](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/pricing) are published in full. On a calendar-year plan, sessions held by 31 December count against this year: [using benefits before the plan year ends](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/counselling-benefits-before-year-end-bc).

Kamloops is a regional centre, and it is worth being straightforward about what that means: there are counsellors here, Interior Health runs mental-health and substance-use services from Lansdowne Street, and Thompson Rivers University brings a steady population of students and staff with it. If you live in the city and want to see somebody in person, that is a real and reasonable option.

The thing that is specific about this region is not scarcity in Kamloops. It is that Kamloops is the place the rest of the Thompson-Nicola drives to. For anyone in Clearwater, Barriere, Merritt, Ashcroft, Logan Lake, Chase or Cache Creek, "available in Kamloops" already means an hour or more each way, on highways that close.

## How private is the video?

Bookings and client records are held in **Cliniko**, the practice’s booking and records system, in an account on Cliniko’s Canadian region. Records are encrypted and access-controlled. Sessions are by secure video: the link arrives by email and opens in your browser, with nothing to install. Sessions are **never recorded**, not for notes, not for supervision, not for training. The [privacy policy](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/privacy) sets out the rest.

## What a hub looks like from outside it

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District covers roughly 45,000 square kilometres for about 140,000 people, and rather more than half of them live in Kamloops itself. That distribution is the whole story: the services concentrate where the population does, and the remaining communities are spread across an area larger than several countries.

A weekly appointment that requires a 90-minute drive each way is not a 50-minute commitment; it is most of a day. That is the single most common reason a course of counselling ends after three or four sessions, not because it was not working, but because the travel stopped being sustainable in February. Removing the drive removes the variable.

**Winter is not a footnote here.** The Coquihalla and Highway 5 close, and the 2021 floods took out sections of highway across this region for months. Continuity of care that depends on a road is continuity that stops when the road does.

**Language access is the sharpest version of the same problem.** South Asian residents are the largest racialized group in Kamloops and Punjabi is the most commonly spoken non-official language in the city's homes, so the practical question is whether a counsellor who works in Punjabi has openings, which varies. BCACC’s Find a Counsellor directory filters by language, and video works anywhere in BC. That is covered properly on [Punjabi-speaking counselling for Kamloops](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/punjabi-counselling/kamloops).

**Seasonal and shift work resists a standing appointment.** Ranching, forestry, the mills, the mines and the tourism season all peak, and during a peak a fixed weekday-afternoon slot is not attendable by anyone working it.

Every region of the province, from one virtual practice.

Why virtual, specifically here

## What changes when distance stops mattering

### No drive, in any weather

Highway closures, winter conditions and a two-hour round trip stop being scheduling problems. For the communities outside Kamloops this is usually the whole difference.

### Covers the whole Thompson-Nicola

Merritt, Clearwater, Barriere, Chase, Ashcroft, Logan Lake and Cache Creek on identical terms, distance is not a factor in a virtual practice.

### Punjabi, English, or both

Sessions in Punjabi by video, from anywhere in the Thompson-Nicola, with no drive either side.

### For rotation and seasonal work

No travel either side of a session, which matters for mill and mine rotations, ranching, and the tourism season.

### Continuity through a move

Registration covers all of BC, so leaving Kamloops, for the coast, for school, for work, does not mean starting again with somebody new.

Not sure which kind of support fits? A [free 15-minute consultation](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/book) is the fastest way to find out, and it is a fine outcome if the answer is a referral somewhere else.

Questions from Kamloops

## Interior distances, and what they do to therapy

Kamloops is the hub of a region where distance is the defining fact of health care. The city itself has counsellors: fewer per capita than the coast, with the waitlists that implies, and the moment you live outside it, in Barriere, Chase, Merritt, Logan Lake or anywhere up the North Thompson, “seeing someone in town” means winter driving on the exact weeks you least have the capacity for it.

That is the honest case for video counselling in the Interior: not that it is more convenient, but that it is the version of weekly therapy that survives January. A session from home happens whether or not the Coquihalla is a mess, and a practice serving all of BC by video is indifferent to which side of the river, or which town. You are on.

TRU students have the same provincial floor as every BC campus: [Here2Talk](https://here2talk.ca), 24/7 and free, plus campus counselling. When campus waitlists lengthen late in term, many student extended-health plans reimburse private RCC sessions, depending on the plan.

## Practicalities for Kamloops and the surrounding region

- **Connection quality outside town**

  ,

Video sessions need a stable connection more than a fast one, and where video strains, sessions can run by phone. A clinical judgement made together rather than a technical failure. Rural connectivity is a real constraint and it is workable.
- **Shift and rotational patterns**

  ,

Mining, rail, health care and wildfire seasons all run on schedules that fixed weekly slots ignore. Booking from open times as they appear, and asking for a time when none fit, absorbs irregular rhythms better than a fixed weekly slot.
- **Interior Health’s public options**

  ,

Public mental-health intake exists and is free; it is also triaged, which in practice means waits for anything non-acute. Private counselling is how people stop waiting, and the two are not exclusive: being on a public list while doing private sessions is common and sensible. The low-cost options page maps the whole landscape.
- **Punjabi-speaking counselling in the Interior**

  ,

Concentrated almost entirely in the Lower Mainland. For Punjabi speakers in Kamloops and the surrounding towns, virtual sessions in Punjabi are, practically speaking, how that service exists at all. A point the Punjabi counselling hub covers region by region.

[![A four-step diagram: a free fifteen-minute video consultation, an intake form sent before the session, the fifty-minute first session covering history and goals, and a decision at the end about whether and how often to continue.](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/first-session-flow.svg) (full size, opens in a new tab)](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/first-session-flow.svg)

## Before you book

**There are counsellors in Kamloops. Why would I do this online?**

If you live in the city and an in-person appointment suits you, that is a perfectly good choice and you would be told so on a consultation call. Virtual makes the clearest difference in two situations: when you are outside Kamloops and the appointment carries an hour of highway each way, and when what you need is specific. A particular approach, or a session in Punjabi, and the local list for that is short.

**Do you work with people in Merritt, Clearwater or Barriere?**

Yes, and on identical terms. The practice is registered across British Columbia, so anywhere in the Thompson-Nicola is the same session. The smaller communities gain the most from it, because they are the ones currently paying for access in driving time.

**What happens if the highway closes or the power goes out?**

Sessions carry on as long as you have a connection, which is the point, a closed Coquihalla no longer cancels an appointment. If your connection drops mid-session it is worth agreeing in advance what happens, so it is an inconvenience rather than an interruption to the work. Turning the camera off cuts the bandwidth a session needs considerably.

**Can I have sessions in Punjabi?**

Yes: in Punjabi, English, or moving between them within a session, without the drive to the Lower Mainland that has historically been the only way to find it from here. The Kamloops Punjabi page covers what is and is not available locally.

**How do I find a therapist or counsellor in Kamloops?**

There are three routes, and they are not exclusive. Interior Health's Kamloops Mental Health & Substance Use centre on Lansdowne Street is free and takes self-referrals: call 310-MHSU (6478) or go in to intake. A private Registered Clinical Counsellor with an office in town can be checked on the BCACC register before you book, which [how to check a counsellor in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/verify-a-counsellor-in-bc) walks through. Or see one of the counsellors on this page by video, from Kamloops or anywhere in the Thompson-Nicola, starting with a free 15-minute consultation.

**I am a student at TRU. Is there something cheaper first?**

Very possibly, and it is worth checking before paying out of pocket. TRU has its own counselling provision, Foundry serves ages 12 to 24 across BC including a virtual service, and there is a broader set of free and low-cost options on the low-cost counselling page. None of that is a sales pitch against them, if a free service fits, use it.

**I work a rotation. Can sessions stop and start?**

Yes, and in this region that is the normal pattern rather than the exception. Booking block by block, with gaps, works, and nothing is lost by pausing. It is better to plan for that from the start than to book weekly, miss three, and conclude that counselling did not suit you.

**Do you see people in Merritt, Salmon Arm, Chase, Sun Peaks, Logan Lake, Clearwater, Revelstoke, 100 Mile House or Williams Lake?**

Yes, on exactly the same terms as Kamloops. Every session is by secure video, so Merritt, Salmon Arm, Chase, Sun Peaks, Logan Lake, Clearwater, Revelstoke, 100 Mile House, Williams Lake and the rest of Thompson-Nicola are served the same way: a Registered Clinical Counsellor, a free 15-minute consultation first, and no travel at either end.

**What does counselling cost in Kamloops?**

From Kamloops, an individual session is $140 for 50 minutes, couples counselling $175 for 50 minutes and an EMDR intensive $190 for 90 minutes, and the first 15-minute consultation is free. The fee is the same anywhere in BC. Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Clinical Counsellor, but whether yours does is plan-dependent, so check it for the RCC designation before the first paid session.

**Who would I see in Kamloops?**

People in Kamloops see Camille Granda, RCC, CCC, who works in English and Tagalog or Savneet Singh, RCC, who works in English and Punjabi. Each is a Registered Clinical Counsellor taking new clients by secure video, and the free consultation is with whichever of them you choose, so the person you meet first is the person you would work with.

**Do you have an office in Kamloops, or is it online?**

Online. There is no office in Kamloops or anywhere else: every session is by secure video, and the confirmation email carries the link. Nothing to install and no waiting room, so you can join from home, a parked car or a closed office in Kamloops.
