# Imposter feelings, and why competence does not cure them

Imposter feelings persist through achievement because the scoring system reclassifies every success as luck, timing or someone else's error. More accomplishment therefore produces more evidence to explain away rather than more confidence. What shifts it is working on the reclassification mechanism itself, and, frequently, examining an environment that is genuinely providing the signal.

The evidence keeps arriving and it keeps not counting. That is the defining feature, not a coincidence.

## The mechanism

The experience is familiar: a sense of being less capable than others believe, combined with an expectation of eventual exposure. What makes it durable is what happens to disconfirming evidence.

A promotion becomes evidence that they were desperate. Praise becomes politeness. A good result becomes an easy brief, or luck, or the team. Each success is processed and discarded before it can register as information about competence, which is why the feeling survives a career that looks, from outside, like an unbroken record of confirmation.

**This is why reassurance does not work,** and why offering it repeatedly can make things worse. Being told you are good at your job enters the same machinery and comes out reclassified as kindness. The person offering it eventually feels ineffective, and the person receiving it feels more fraudulent for having needed it.

It also explains the strange asymmetry in the accounting: failures are treated as direct evidence about ability, while successes are treated as circumstantial. The same standard is not applied in both directions, and until that is visible, it operates as perception rather than as bias.

[![A four-node loop: a trigger produces anxiety, avoidance brings immediate relief, that relief teaches the brain the threat was real, and the situation becomes more frightening next time, feeding back into the trigger.](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/anxiety-avoidance-cycle.svg) (full size, opens in a new tab)](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/anxiety-avoidance-cycle.svg)

Relief is the reward that keeps the loop running.

## What it costs

- **Chronic over-preparation**

  ,

The most common compensation. Frequently rewarded, entirely invisible, and the reason the work looks manageable from outside while the person is running at capacity. It is also the signature of

  [high-functioning anxiety](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/guides/high-functioning-anxiety)

  .
- **Not applying**

  ,

Roles, promotions, opportunities declined pre-emptively on the grounds of not being ready. Compounds over a career in a way that is impossible to see from inside it.
- **Difficulty delegating**

  ,

Not control. An unwillingness to have your name on anything you did not verify. A major driver of overload in senior roles.
- **Inability to be visible**

  ,

Avoiding presenting, publishing or claiming credit, which then genuinely reduces recognition and supplies real evidence for the belief.
- **No relief from success**

  ,

The most demoralising cost. Achievement produces brief absence of dread rather than satisfaction, and the bar moves before the moment lands.
- **Exhaustion that nobody understands**

  ,

Because the visible workload does not explain it, and the invisible standard does.

If nothing you achieve has counted for a long time, [a free 15-minute consultation is a place to start](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/book).

## What actually changes it

**Catch the reclassification as it happens.** Not arguing with the conclusion, noticing the mechanism. "That is the thing where I turn a success into luck." Once visible it becomes considerably harder to perform automatically, and this is the single most useful intervention.

**Apply your standard consistently.** Would you conclude the same about a colleague with an identical record? The gap between the two answers is the bias, measured. This works where reassurance does not, because you generate it yourself.

**Keep a record.** Written, contemporaneous, factual: what you did, what happened. Memory reconstructs the past through the current belief, and a written record is the only thing that survives that.

**Do the thing before you feel ready.** Confidence follows evidence of having done it, not the other way around. Waiting to feel ready is a wait with no end.

**Say it to one person.** The isolation compounds it, because everyone assumes they are the only one. It is extremely common in high-performing environments, and hearing that from a peer does more than hearing it from an article.

[![Three bands describing the routes to paying for counselling in BC: extended health benefits, public and no-cost services, and paying privately.](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/therapy-cost-in-bc.svg) (full size, opens in a new tab)](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/img/therapy-cost-in-bc.svg)

Three routes, three different trade-offs.

## When it is not you

A necessary caution, because framing this purely as distorted thinking can do real harm.

Sometimes the feeling is an accurate reading of an environment. Being the only person of your background in a room, being consistently interrupted, having contributions attributed to someone else, or receiving different scrutiny than colleagues all produce a well-founded sense of not belonging, and that is information about the room rather than a cognitive error.

Treating a structural problem as a personal one adds self-blame to an already unfair situation, and a counsellor who does that is doing harm. The useful work in that case is separating what is accurate from what is being generalised, and then deciding what to do about a workplace, which may include leaving it.

It is also legitimate to be new and genuinely inexperienced. That is not imposter syndrome; that is being early in something, and the answer is time rather than therapy. [Mental health and work in BC](https://www.westpeakwellness.com/resources/workplace-mental-health-bc) covers the situations where the environment itself is the problem.

## Common questions

**Is imposter syndrome a diagnosis?**

No. It is a widely recognised experience rather than a clinical condition, and a counsellor does not diagnose in any case.

**Why does more success make it worse?**

Because each success raises the stakes of the anticipated exposure while being reclassified as luck. More achievement therefore produces more to explain away rather than more confidence.

**Will reassurance help?**

Rarely, and it can entrench things. The same mechanism that discounts your achievements discounts other people's assessments of them.

**What if I actually am underqualified?**

Then that is a real and workable situation with a straightforward answer: learning, support, time. The distinguishing feature of imposter feelings is that the evidence contradicts them and keeps not counting.
